Chemical Biology / Biomaterials division in UNIST Chemistry consists of three faculty members whose research interests range from bioorganic chemistry, biophysics (biophysical chemistry), bioinorganic chemistry, and biomaterials. We seek to address important questions in life science and medicine by using chemistry and physics as great tools in modern bioscience.

Specifically, Kee Lab seeks to understand complex biological systems at molecular level using novel tools of synthetic organic chemistry and chemical biology. Min Lab studies on the folding/function of membrane proteins, the largest class of drug targets, using single-molecule force and fluorescence methods. Ryu Lab studies on synthesis of novel biopolymer materials usefully applied in drug delivery, bioimaging, and cancer therapy.

The Chemistry Department is well equipped for cutting-edge research in chemical biology, biochemistry, and biophysics. Our instruments include HPLCs, FPLCs, and various types of spectrometers and analytical apparatuses as well as the cell culture facility and a cold room. In addition, UNIST Central Research Facilities (UCRF) provide numerous state-of-the-art equipment such as NMR, LC-MS, MALDI-TOF MS, Orbitrap-MS, confocal microscope, super-resolution microscope, and SEM/TEM. Single-molecule spectroscopy apparatuses such as magnetic tweezers or smFRET are also available. With these chemical/physical methods and others, we hope to map the parts of yet unknown world of biological science.
